(Un)Folding Bottari - Kimsooja
Artist talk with Curator Kim Keumhwa
Leeum Museum

October 2, 2024, at 2 PM

Artist Kimsooja has been exploring the relationships between life and death, time and space, and self and the world by expanding the archetypal principles of “unfolding and wrapping” inherent in the traditional Korean bottari across various mediums, including canvas, objects, and architecture. In this conversation, artist Kimsooja and curator Keumhwa Kim will discuss how the bottari evolves into a “space of light” through the artist’s unique perspective. The dialogue will focus on Kimsooja’s 2021 installation To Breathe in the atrium of the Leeum Museum of Art, examining the ambivalent cycle of materiality and immateriality, the metaphors of light and breath, and the intricate relationship between time and space. This conversation presents an opportunity to gain deeper insights into the artist’s philosophy and the broader expansion of her conceptual framework.
